Growing up in LA before the advent of GPS, my Mom had a tendency to get lost on the roads. We knew we were heading somewhere we probably shouldn’t be when we started to see signs for bail bonds and Schlitz malt liquor. So I was curious to try this. Too sweet, but otherwise not bad. Wonder if adding sugar is how they ramp up the alcohol content?—by Alexander Muller

Not much different than Heady. Maybe even more hop forward and less complex (if that’s possible). Cool can though. Reminds me of the cover of “Fear and Loathing”. —by Alexander Muller

This is actually GOOD! I’d given up on finding an IPA that I would actually want to buy if I saw it again. The hops are there but not amped up to 11 like Heady Overthetopper.—by Alexander Muller

Given the name, I was expecting worse. Not a great beer, but less of a hop bomb than I anticipated.—by Alexander Muller

Overly hopped beer that’s worse than Heady Topper. What else is there to say?—by Alexander Muller

  • Heady Topper

Maybe I liked this better in previous years at the end of an entire group of IPAs when I was already inured to the hop assault on my taste buds or maybe I’ve just given up trying to go with the hype. Not that it’s not drinkable, but overly hopped IPAs just aren’t as interesting as other styles.—by Alexander Muller

  • Rochefort 8

Scratch my earlier comment at the beginning of the contest about there being a lack of representation of Belgian beers. I think I read it on Breitbart. Have had this beer several times and it remains a prime example of a great Belgian beer. Liked the Chimay a bit better though, so I had to knock it down a half a peg. —by Alexander Muller

Going into this contest, I assumed I would prefer Rochefort 8 over the other Belgians, but trying this one in close succession surprised me. Complex but not overbearing. Almost creamy finish. Very easy to drink. Focusing attention on a variety of good beers over a short period is why this contest is so edifying.—by Alexander Muller

Outlier from IPA orthodoxy of maximized hops. Actually has complexity. Tried together with Heady Topper and it wasn’t even close.—by Alexander Muller

Fruit flavorings in beer, like Presidential tweets, often seem poorly considered and executed. Relieved that this one is not too awful, though not my favorite either. Too sour and too heavy handed with the cherry flavor, but it is drinkable. Best I can say, not a dead ringer for Robitussin.—by Alexander Muller

Ja! The Germans definitely know what they’re doing (despite the clever FOB video spoof). Sour but with added complexity. This is how a sour beer should be done, with some restraint instead of just dropping a carbonated vinegar bomb in your mouth. Still like their Vitus best, but this one is right up there. —by Alexander Muller

  • Rodenbach Grand Cru

Admittedly have had some disagreeable encounters with sours. However, this one claims to be different. In operation for nearly 200 years, Rodenbach claims this is the original sour and of course the best. Actually not terrible. Not great either. Tastes like fizzy kombucha that someone forgot in the fridge for a long while. Bright side, if this one’s the best, I don’t have to try any more!—by Alexander Muller

  • Bell's Hopslam

From the label you know what you’re getting with this beer, and if what you really want are hops, this one is actually pretty good. No subtlety here, but the honey seems to smooth the hops out a bit so its drinkable. Wouldn’t be my first choice, but worth a try.—by Alexander Muller

This couldn’t possibly be a gimmick could it? Let’s do an experiment. Opened on 2/14/17 as directed. OK beer. Overly hopped, typical of San Diego. At least the added flavors aren’t out of control like in that Mexican abomination from Stone. Left some on the counter. Next morning, what a difference. Warm, flat, a bit acrid. Who would have thought a day would make such a difference. Maybe their onto something?—by Alexander Muller

Totally different from the IPAs and Stouts so far. Odd to include a Belgian in the local set, but I’ll take one where I can get it especially since it looks like this may be the only one in the case. Sad.—by Alexander Muller

Was underwhelmed by the Scratch beers in last year’s case, but this is an excellent effort by Troegs. Good balance with the chocolate, and not too bitter with the hops. Very drinkable—by Alexander Muller

My first beer of the contest. Never heard of it before even though it is about as local as it gets. Surprisingly good IPA. Smooth, not too hoppy. Nothing extraordinary, but good enough to warrant looking for it again.—by Alexander Muller
