Hey remember that time you saw Temple of Doom, and you were like, hey that was pretty cool, but then you suddenly remembered Kate Capshaw was in it, whining her way through the part and you realized that there was no way it was better than Raiders of the Lost Ark, but then you went to school the next day and everyone was saying it was no better than Raiders of the Lost Ark and you didn't want to be a follower and you wanted to be the cool kid so you said Temple of Doom was better and you never waivered? But deep down, you know there's no fucking way Temple of Doom is better than Raiders of the Lost Ark.—by CO

This was the beer that turned me into a beer snob. On a trip to Ann Arbor, my friend found one at a local store and it changed the way I thought about beer. Holy cajoles was it delicious. It was that day I spurned miller light and began being a picky SOB. I have found a lot of better beer since then, but this beer will always be special to me (tear).—by Drew Silow

This review is for last night's FOB social at 2SP in Aston. Thanks to Phil for organizing, and Andrew Knasiak for providing excellent food to even those who came late and said they didn't want any until all the food had been packed up. Huzzah and thank you, gentlemen. Also, I hope this score doesn't skew the contest too much: I admit I have not even tasted the Hopslam, which is currently collectively rated as an 8.08.—by Jay Hannon

I was very surprised to see this beer averaging 8.08 at the time I scored it. Hopslam was king in its heyday, but not so much anymore. The only reason it remains relevant is due to its once-a-year release, otherwise it would've retired along with Hop Wallop.—by Michael Lee

See now this is MY kind of DIPA. With a strong piney, resiny hop presence that almost makes my teeth chatter. And the honey is implemented perfectly to give it just the right bit of sweetness to offset the hops and 10% ABV. I'd like to try this around 8% ABV....so I could drink more of them! Stumbled upon Hopslam on tap in a Philly bar during the winter after drinking beer ALL day at a German Bierfest. Slipped on the ice going out and Hopslammed myself on the sidewalk. It hurt. And as one who doesn't like to drink too many beers in one sitting I love the 10%ABV...bonus...I'll take 2 please. I will follow up with Heady tonight to go head 2 head. This was a really good beer. Not a "holy shit, that's good!" beer, but really good. I understand it's rather hard to come by and can cause a bit of a ruckus when it's available. But interestingly enough, at a bar the other night I opted for Two Hearted, when Hopslam was available. Yeah, the fact that I would have paid more and got a smaller glass when all I wanted was a pint with my meal was a key factor in that decision. But still, it underscores the point that Hopslam didn't blow me a away like I had hoped it would. HOWEVER! It earns an extra half point from me for giving me an excuse to post an Onyx gif and to say...SLAM!!! Da da da, da da da...let the boys be boys!!—by Spencer

It was tremendous... but seriously... the Doubletree? Now it's in a can in my FOB Case. You guys f'n rock. Not as good as from the keg - but I'm lovin' this! Many years back, Quotations in Media would get Hopslam and it would be an annual event for Paul the Ripper, myself, Boorujy, Ag, and some others. The beer thing was picking up steam and Quotations was "cool". That was until the owner, Mike, called Paul some unholy names for "Cherry picking" his Hopslam. It means he thought we only went in there once a year to get Hopslam which was total fiction since its the only place we hung. See, I don't like when people come at my friends so I have a simple ask of all of you at FOB. Walk into Quotations and order a Hopslam. Tell them that you only come in here when there is Hopslam and other times of year you prefer to go across the street to Iron Hill and Sterling Pig. When you leave say "That was a great Hopslam Mike. I just love when you get Hopslam! I'll see you next year during Hopslam Season!" —by Phil Aiken

I had this on draft on January 23rd and absolutely loved it. A buddy of mine and I got a crowler and put in fresh habaneros pre-sealing. The result was scorchingly tremendous and the honey really stood out. I managed to score a few cans before the FOB as well. SO, upon trying the canned version, I was somewhat disappointed. It just didn't seem to deliver. I wonder why! I can see that some people loved this one and some very much didn't. I'm just going to go gut instinct on this particular experience with the canned version and not with the draft version I had. What the hell. —by Dave "SD" Cook

I was having a hard time getting through it (gave it a 4 I think) and Alex busted out a few hopslams and down the drain the Palo went. Was totally the right decision then and I would do it again in a heart beat. The first few slips took some adjustment. I really appreciate the lengths FOB went to in order to secure this for us. I enjoyed it over an hour sitting last night, and then spent three hours today working on a project while thinking about this review. I am perplexed on this one. I liked it quite a bit, and I could detect the honey, because the can told me it was in it. But if you handed this to me without saying a word I would identify it as a less bready Belgian, not as a honey infused IPA. This is not damning with faint praise. Times change and so does everything else. BUT I still love Def Leppard, in fact I am listening to Mirror, Mirror on vinyl as we speak. It's not a daily event, but I definitely still enjoy the music. Hopslam used to be the basis upon which I judged other beers but much like my senior picture below... it seemed to work for me at the time. I used to describe Hopslam as lite and sweet but now that I have traveled far down the road of my beer journey I see the error of my ways ( who doesnt love a blindish-red mustache?). Given all the complexities of other beers, Hopslam just landed as a malty fart on my tongue. I really think a 10 should only be awarded to the best beer. I've supported the heady getting a 10 the past two years but I think heady will get a 9.5 this year. I feel like a beer needs to step up and get the ten to supplant, or perhaps even repeal and replace heady. 10's are historical, they stand the test of time, they are disruptive, and in many ways groundbreaking. The special sauce in the Big Mac was a ten. The opening kung fu scene in the matrix was a 10. The Jaws Indianapolis soliloquy was a ten. "I'll never wear a lifejacket again!" I've had Bell's hopslam before and it is really close. The honey cuts the strong hop flavor and at 10+ abv it really makes you happy. Best beer from the midwest in my opinion. So I'm going rouge and starting w all IPAs (sorry Phil)! The fresher the better, right? My first choice is a classic: Hopslam. Medium pine & grapefruit aroma w notes of tangerine & lightly floral hops and whiff of honey in background. Froths up a bit when swished around the palate, w a medium grainy sweetness accentuated by mild honey up front quickly joined by those same hop flavors found in the aroma and med/full bitterness & strong yet smooth alcohol warmth that assists the fade to a mildly dry finish. I've heard recent reviews on other sites calling this a malt bomb, but I think a lot of tastes are shifting towards those juicy, hop forward NE IPAs and overlooking the quality of a well balanced IPA. Don't get me wrong, this is def hop forward on the bitterness, yet it delivers a malty sweetness to balance the bitterness while enhancing the citrusy hops at the same time. Still strong in my book. 8.0—by Mike Kinsley
